Opening of Friars Walk and Cineworld
Last Thursday Friars Walk, Newport was officially opened.
As an avid cinema goer I asked Cineworld Friars Walk if they would consider inviting a few bloggers to the Gala Opening. I was so pleased when they said yes!
The new cinema is ideally situated at the end of John Frost Square and above the restaurants at Usk Plaza. The bright lights on the outside make it really stand out.
At the opening we had drinks and nibbles while listening to Nidus Children’s Choir singing. The foyer is bright as is the main concourse into each screen.
The 8 auditoriums have enough seating for a total of over 1000 visitiors. Comfortable seats, huge clear screens and powerful sound systems will make for a great visit!
For the opening night we were treated to a viewing of Steve Jobs. Before it started there were rousing speeches from Kerrie – the manager , Queensbury and the Mayor.
We settled back to watch the film. I was looking forward to it as I’m a bit of tech nut, but unfortunately the film didn’t live up to its hype. I found it rather boring and sad to say we left after the first hour.
This is no reflection on the cinema of course! We’ll definitely be back – after all I do have my Unlimited card!
We’ve been waiting for something like Friars Walk to come to Newport for many years. Newport used to be a ‘go to’ town but over the past 10-15 years it has declined. Full of ‘cheap’ shops, money lenders and charity shops.
You really wouldn’t want to go there in the evening either!
But all that is about to change. We parked in the Kingsway car park and walked out onto John Frost Square, turned right and you get your first sight of Friar’s Walk. Cineworld, H&M and Next then you turn left between these two shops. It’s amazing, it looks like an arcade and you can see Debenhams at the far end.
We popped into a few of the shops but I couldn’t wait to get into Debenhams. While walking around you really can’t believe this is Newport, it made me feel really emotional.
Will you be visiting?
